Rafa: A Story Based on True Facts
“During my 37 years as a player and, since 2023 as a coach, I’ve had the opportunity to live both the best and worst sides of golf…”
My time as a junior player was filled with success. I was on a scholarship in Madrid from the Royal Spanish Golf Federation for 2 years, winning dozens of tournaments and representing my community on several occasions.
Despite training every day with good coaches, my performance on the field worsened, and I didn’t know why.
At 18, I went to the USA on a university scholarship, and my game started to get worse as the months went by. I didn’t understand anything…
During vacations, I would return home and within a few weeks, I would recover my game with the help of my father, who is also a golf instructor. But as soon as I returned to university and a few weeks passed, my game would fail again.
Those were tough years for me in the realm of golf. Even so, the experience was incredible.
After finishing university, I decided to turn professional and try to play at the highest level. I trained hard every day, did everything I was supposed to do, but my game kept getting worse. I still didn’t understand anything…
After a couple of years playing, I started working as a translator at golf seminars and discovered that I was passionate about teaching.
I began to take every course I could find on golf and its training, and I started to uncover the factors that had influenced why my game didn’t improve during my time in the USA and my professional career.
For years as a coach, I tried to apply this knowledge with my students, but the results, although technically good, were not as good as I wanted to achieve.
I knew I could do more for my students, but I didn’t know how. I also knew that to improve my students further, I had to do more than just improve their technique.
I had to convey my knowledge on how to train, how to think, how to play under pressure, and how to use strategy to get the most out of the game they already possess.
I also knew that one-hour individual classes per week were not going to work if I wanted my students to truly improve.
In the end, what a player wants is to improve their final results.
I wasn’t convinced by my teaching model.
I found some coaches in the USA who were using training techniques that were exactly what I was looking for. I got in touch with them.
Since then, I have been learning the systems that now allow my students to achieve their goals and enable me to apply everything I know.

My Beliefs: The Foundation of My Method
“I believe that golfers…
- need their golf to be assesed and a plan to be created for them with their goals in mind
- require learning how to evaluate their golf, at least, in a basic way
- must learn to plan a practice around the parts of their game that need improvement
- need to play under preasure and to understand the emotional side of golf
- must know how the swing goes in order to understand their owns'
- need to be players, not just "swing players" when they are on the grass
- who practice incorrectly may worsen as players
- need to learn to play with their resources each day, and cannot change their level when they are playing
- who train in a proper environment and practice with other players, add a key factor to improve their golf
- who fear of failiure face one of the biggest obstacles to learn and improve
